I recently received a few negative comments on my video “How to organize a very small closet space” and it got me thinking.
Why has it become the standard that organization needs to be pretty?? On Pinterest you see the beautiful closets, kitchen pantries, garages- all of which look magazine perfect and totally unrealistic for many people to create and maintain. I have always told my clients that organization is about finding what you need when you need it. Just making it look nice does not make it useful and functional.
As a busy mom I don’t have time to fold my tshirts to perfection, alphabetize my spices, color code my clothes and create a gift wrap station! I am about living my life, enjoying my child and having a house that is organized but not sterile. I know not everyone feels the same- some of you love to be uber organized and that is great, too. I just want to make sure that everyone understands organization is about finding things and being productive/efficient- while beauty is often more about interior design and your personal style/taste.
Here are a few screenshots from the video
Someone mentioned that I have wire hangers. Ok this is a “do as I say not as I do” moment 🙂 I agree wire hangers are not the best thing for your clothes or your closet, but hey they work for me and I am too cheap to get all new hangers right now- and that is ok.
I sort of grouped my sweaters by color… Here I was highlighting the sweater organizers. Trust me you should have seen this shelf BEFORE I installed them.
Sweaters were flopping all over the place.
This closet is not perfect. That is not what I was trying to showcase. Rather, I wanted to show all the tools/tricks you can use in a very small closet. Here I am showcasing how to make the very most of your small space by adding shoe organizers and shelves.
My thoughts on sharing this closet were not to show how pretty you can make it, but rather what you can do in a very small space. Sure I wish it looked more beautiful, but it doesn’t and that is the reality for many people struggling with small closets.
I hope that you don’t get stuck trying to make things color coded, matching and ‘pretty’ when organizing. That comes later when your system works and you feel like you have been successful organizing and using the space.
Here is the video if you want to see my “messy” tips 🙂
